Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert – in fact almost all of our great composers wrote prolific amounts of chamber music, and this is often where we find some of their most profound works. The benefits of exposing students to these masterpieces are well documented, as playing chamber music develops musicianship and encourages collaboration, leadership, responsibility and social skills.
However, it’s not always possible to get together as an ensemble. Sometimes there is a lack of rehearsal space or students simply live too far away from each other to meet on a regular basis. Practising can also be difficult, especially if you are learning an ‘inner’ part out of context. Of course, sometimes you just want to sight read through pieces and discover new repertoire.
